Abstract

The Auditory Behavior Questionnaire is a validated tool used to assess atypical auditory behaviors in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder. The study aimed to translate and validate this questionnaire for use in European Portuguese. The linguistic and cultural adaptation included a process of translation and back-translation, expert review and pre-test comprehension proofing. Native European Portuguese-speaking parents of 24 children with Autism Spectrum Disorder completed the Portuguese version of the questionnaire online, with re-application within two to seven days. Factor analysis confirmed the validity of its four-factor structure. Strong internal consistency was indicated by Cronbach’s alpha values for each factor of 0.807, 0.914, 0.729, and 0.872. Reproducibility was demonstrated trough intraclass correlation coefficients for each factor of 1.000, 0.927, 0.844, and 0.963. These findings support that this Portuguese version of the Auditory Behavior Questionnaire has appropriate validity and reliability for use in the European Portuguese-speaking population.
