Resumo

Introdução e objectivos: Os abscessos perifaríngeos são uma causa frequente de consulta e atenção urgente por médicos de atenção primâria, no Serviço de Urgências e Otorrinolaringologistas. Embora todos os autores consideram que o diagnóstico é fundamentalmente clínico, muito frequentemente a certeza diagnóstica só deve ser realizada por prova de imagem. Por tanto, quando e que provas devem ser solicitadas?. Este é o objectivo de nosso trabalho.

Material e método: Realizou-se un estudo retrospectivo e revisão bibliográfica da literatura médica nos últimos vinte anos.

Resultados: A revisão realizada confirma que a presentação clínica, com a exploração clínica, além de uma prova de imagem (ECO, TAC, RMN...) são os métodos de diagnóstico habituãis, mas não objectivamos ninhum protocolo para o diagnóstico desta patología.

Conclusões: Não existem, na revisão bibliográfica realizada, protocolos que sejam utilizados no diagnóstico de uma patologia tão frequente embora não exenta de surpresas.
